"ONE STEP BEYOND" READING RESPONSE BLOG

7TH GRADE, MCSCHOOL

As we read Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, we learn more about the Holocaust and World War II, and their effects on people during that time.

We look back on the Holocaust as a time of disgrace for mankind. How could people let this happen? How could one human being be so... inhumane... to another? How could so many people join in this genocide, this mass destruction of a group of people just because of their religion?

This period of time that happened roughly 70 years ago seems so savage, so brutal, that we can’t wrap our “modern” minds around it. However, did you know that even in “modern” times, there are still crimes of hatred like this going on?

This blog is designed for you, 7th grade students, to share your ideas about what hatred can do to the human spirit, as we see it through Anne Frank's eyes and in the other literary works we study.

Was Hitler a Terrorist?

Another powerful discussion in class today, with two important questions raised (by YOU!):
1. What exactly IS a terrorist?
2. Could we call Hitler a terrorist?

The first question was a great one, and even today, the world's leaders (United Nations, included) cannot really settle on a definition. If you go to this link on Wikipedia, you will see many different definitions of terrorism. Which do you think is the most accurate?

Gihad Ali, a Palestinian who had to live through the "War on Terrorism" going on in the Middle East, wrote a poem called "Eye to Eye" when she was a teenager. The poem was later made into a song called "Look into My Eyes" by Outlandish, a group based out of Denmark. (Notice the trend... writing by teens that gets their voice HEARD). Here is her definition of terrorism:

I'm terrorized in my own land
and I'm the terrorist?

You think you know all about terrorism
but you don't know it the way I do.
So let me define the term for you.
And teach you what you thought you knew.

I've known terrorism for quite some time,
fifty-four years and more.
It's the fruitless garden uprooted in my yard.
It's the bulldozer in front of my door.

Terrorism breathes the air I breathe.
It's the checkpoint on my way to school.
It's the curfew that jails me in my own home,
and the penalties of breaking that curfew rule.

Terrorism is the robbery of my land.
And the torture of my mother.
The imprisonment of my innocent father.
The bullet in my baby brother.

So American, don't tell me you know about
the things I feel and see.
I'm terrorized in my own land
and the blame is put on me.
(excerpt from: "Eye to Eye")

We discussed the primary motive of a terrorist: Is it just to "kill people"? From the definition above, and what we know of terrorist attacks, we can conclude that terrorists perform these acts to gain POWER. In the "Why War" post, many of you agreed that the war was primarily for our "human need/desire" for power.
What is the easiest way to gain power? MAKE PEOPLE TERRIFIED. This is how Hiltler and the Nazi party managed to control millions of Jewish (and Non-Jewish) people. Think about all the diary entries in which Anne wrote about her fear of getting discovered.

In current times, news reports are flooded with information about actual or attempted terrorist attacks, one of the most recent being the attempted car bomb in times square (NY Times: Police Find Car Bomb in Times Square). We even have a terrorist threat "meter" to tell us innocent civilians just how "afraid" we should be.

Since 9-11, the threat has remained "high" to "severe" basically the entire time. Why might this be, like Esteban said in class, to the advantage both of the U.S. government and of terrorists? Does it keep us terrified and therefore controlled?

Here is a link to 2 videos that give you information about a documentary made after 9-11 by Micheal Moore, called "Fahrenheit 911". Pay attention in the first video to what is said right in the beginning. The second video is Micheal Moore's "main idea" about terrorism.

1st video: Fahrenheit 911 Trailer

2nd video: Fahrenheit 911 Conclusion

Based on these videos, what we discussed in class, and the idea that in order to gain power over many people, you must make them afraid, who do you think is a terrorist?
Was Hitler a terrorist? Why/Why not?
Is Osama Bin Laden a terrorist?
OR...
Is the U.S. government just as guilty of terrorism as Hitler and Bin Laden?

  1. hitler was a terrorist, he made al the jews fear..so it would be easy for him to control.
like victor put in the bord ''terrorist'' and hilight the letter TERROR.. Bin Laden is also a terrorit because que produces terror to every one...like he put bombs and stuff , people are afraid of him,so they will just do what he tells them to do.

  2. I agree with Mao, I think Hitler was really a terrorist because he made fear the people he wanted to kill (because it was not only Jews) and then attacked (but that still doesn't mean he is the bad guy for all) , Bin Laden was also a terrorist he has been terrifying people for a long time, making them feel scared of him attacking at any moment. The word TERRORist says its definition itself, to make terror and then attack. I really liked the poem it explains very well what terrorism is, and I agree with that definition.
we can't know if the US government is as bad, it depends on everyones opinion, because if someone thinks the government is bad, that person will completely think they put the bar high unpurpose that makes them as terrorist as Bin Laden and Hitler, but if you think it is a good government, you'll think they are just warning and saying the truth even though you are scared, I don't know what to say because I'm not in the government and I don't know how it works, so I wont like to take a side.

  3. 1.I think a terrorist who uses acts of violence to inflict terror to others.
2.I think Hitler is terrorist because he did this. Maybe not himself, but he sent others to do it.

  4. i think that the definition that best desscribes terrorism is the one of 2004, because that is what i reay believe that terrorism is, a criminal act. Also this poem describes terrorism perfectly, i like how the autor describes terrorism and compares it with his real life and what is going on in his world. Actually i think that some terrorist also kill because they want to gain attention, get attention from th egovernmet and of normal people, while others just to get power by making people scared. i think that yes, the terror meter is just to keep us scared so therefore more controlled. the article about the bomb, well, i believe that these terrorists are really bad nowadays 'cause like many people wouldnt kill other people, cause they are the same as you, they are your family....in the world there are many terrorists, and i think hitler and that guy, bin laden are also terrorists because even though at some point they have done some good to somebody they have still onde things that are unforgetable and bad. im not really sure if the us government is also as guilty as hitler an bin laden, but they have done their bad things, they just want their country to keep progressing....

  5. i think hitler was a terrorist because he killed jews... because i dont know.. but he was a bad man for jews and a good man for germans..... but i say... if hitler killed german people , germans will not think that hitler is a good man. soo.... and about peter and anne... look this quote ..."[inally I twist my heart round again, so that the bad is on the outside and the good is on the inside, and keep on trying to find a way of becoming what I would so like to be, and what I could be, if... there weren't any other people living in the world." 6. i actually think that calling hittler a terorist is an opinion. i agree to the thought of him being a terrorist but this maybe this is not the same opinion of others. for example: for germans who wanted power i don't really belief that germans thought him as a terrorist because they were from the same side. in the other hand, jews and people who were forced to kill jews, i think they may have concidered him as a terrorist.

  7. I agree with Marla and Gaby, because, it's true, calling Hitler a terrorost may be an opinion, becuase besides destroying everything, that was, as they say, It's job, becasue he's defending his country! (except the jews, and defenders too.) Now, I'll answer the qustion. 1. A terrorist is someone who destroy's important places to gain what they're looking for.(that's at least, what I think.)
    2. Well, we could say that he IS one, but he's not. If he is, then,EVERY country fighting is a terrorist!

  8. Thank you for your comments so far... I agree with you, Gaby, that it is completely one's opinion whether Hitler is a terrorist or not. However, that is what I am asking you... for your opinion.
When you read the Afterword this weekend, you will get more insight into the way that German people saw Hitler. Remember the father in "The Boy in Striped Pyjamas"? He was completely supportive of Hitler's ideas, even to the point where he had his children studying only Pro-German, Anti-Jewish books. Bruno's father was not an exception in his time, he was one of the millions of people who were "tricked" into believing Hitler's propoganda (see Afterword).
One of Hitler's positive qualities was the great charisma he had that got so many people to follow his lead. If only he had used that for good...

  9. about what maria de lourdes said, i don-t quite agree with her thought of hittler defending his country because my definition of a country or nation is a group of people who lives in it, EVERYONE!! i mean, if he was protecting or defending his country, why did he not care about the jews?OK lets say he was protecting or defending his country, but the real question is From who??

ms. nyitray, i hav not read the afterward yet,but as i said before in the first comment, some germans saw him as a great lider, other saw him as a terrorist like jews. i seriously think he was other than a dictator, a terrorist, murderer, asasin, etc... in other words, in my opinion hittler was totally a big, wild, bloody and violent chaos!! =.=

  10. I believe, as with anything in life, its 'bout point of view & perception. A terrorist to many hitler was a hero for many others one definition of terrorist might be an american "synonym" for someone who takes revenge for destruction of their own monuments, and although wrong we mustn't dicard the posibility of they getting back at us for their loses caused by the us goverment and as anne said "the little man is just as guilty as the big man". our point of view hitler and osama vin laden are terrorists. their point of view they are heroes.

now how guilty is the "Big Man"? as guity as you make him again p.o.v. ours : they are heroes their pov: TERRORISTS! the goverment can do whatever hey want with the pretext that they are doing to protect us . also they could control us easily when we are terrorized

  11. I really think Hitler was a terrorist because this word has it's own definition in it 'terror'. He scared people and made them afraid, not only jews, more people. He scared people by telling the people he was going to kill them, that's called terror!

  12. Hitler was a terrorist because he used terror to get control over the war, he used fear to win the war; In the other side we have people like Anne that are the ones that had fear of Hitler and, they were hiding!
In the same side of Hitler, but with something different, we have the terrorists; and, just as Hitler, they use the terror to control not only people, but the U.S; why?- I would answer that cuestion with another.... do you imagin how it would be to have the control of the United States?, 50 states under your control!
Maybe, they do it in look for revenge, maybe someone deported.....
The plan of the terrorists is working, because, after Bin Laden´s attempt, if you are on a airplane, or in the airport and you see an Iraqi, you immediately think on terrorism!; why?-You have fear/terror! from TERRORism/TERRORists!!
Today, we live with terrorists; because, my own definition of TERRORist is anyone who uses fear to control/get something.

  14. I really think he was a terorist because you can't go to the peoples house and make whatever you want to do so i can't really say that he was a good person because he don't was a good person so... In my opinion he was one and im agree with all my classmates and now everybody says that things can takes fruits out and make a different so i think so.. When theres was a war everybody fight for the things they want and now you says something, anyone things so so good.So if we can solve things with words let's do it!!!

  15. For me hitler was a terrorist becuse he gained power every day because as we discussed in class fear is the key for power so hitler made everyone think he was in control of the world so he could get higher every day until he gets to the top an kill every body that crosses in front of him

  16. I think a terrorist is a person that imposes fear over a group of people for a certain objective. They could be different objectives for example ti gain power and control over people.
I believe that Hitler was a terrorist because he imposed terror to Jewish people all over Europe an also the ones that did not followed the same ideals.
I really do not have an opinion if the US goverment is a terrorist or not because we dont really know why they kept the threat meter levels high. Maybe to gain power and control over US citizen or maybe to the US citizen warned that something could happen any time soon.

  21. People, so many details and no one got to the main idea. Listen to me, Hitler filled with fear the cities of europe, so not only the jews, but his men were afraid of him. That's probably how he got so much power.

Also, Terorists still live today, so this ain't a 1920's thing. For example, Osama Vin Laden or whatever. He said he had his reasons, though. I wonder, did Hitler have HIS reasons? Thanks y'all.
