"ONE STEP BEYOND" READING RESPONSE BLOG

7TH GRADE, MCSCHOOL

As we read Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, we learn more about the Holocaust and World War II, and their effects on people during that time.

We look back on the Holocaust as a time of disgrace for mankind. How could people let this happen? How could one human being be so... inhumane... to another? How could so many people join in this genocide, this mass destruction of a group of people just because of their religion?

This period of time that happened roughly 70 years ago seems so savage, so brutal, that we can’t wrap our “modern” minds around it. However, did you know that even in “modern” times, there are still crimes of hatred like this going on?

This blog is designed for you, 7th grade students, to share your ideas about what hatred can do to the human spirit, as we see it through Anne Frank's eyes and in the other literary works we study.

Common Ground

Going to the movies, going to the mall, hanging out with friends at the pool, beach or each other's houses... these were times I lived for as an adolescent, and I would imagine you do, too. What would you do if all of a sudden I told you that you must remain in your house with your family, for years? What would happen to your "teenage life"?

You all can speak from personal experience, as you are all there right now... in that "awkward" time between childhood and being a teenager... adolescence. This is a great time in your life, but can simultaneousy be confusing and difficult. Anne Frank describes many "adolescent" moments, thoughts and feelings that she has in her diary. Although she was a teeenager roughly 70 years ago in Holland, during World War II, we can still relate to her experiences with adolescence.

Look for textual evidence in Anne's diary about her adolescence, and tell us how it relates to your current life, or to the life of any adolescent in general. Please indicate the exact quote and the page you got it from, then tell us about how it relates to life as an adolescent. Hint: Anne begins focusing more on this change starting on p. 127...

  2. The song i put for me is good for her and represent the things she is passing now in her life. So the song i put is Alice because i think she feel in a hole, and in other world, because she cant do things that others teenagers do, or kids too. Because there in the "SECRET ANNEXE" she is like in a place she dont want to pass all her life...And thats why i think "ALICE" is the best song for her...

  6. -I must live on and pray to God that He will let Peter cross my path when I come out here, and that when he reads the love in my eyes he will say, "Oh, Anne, if I had only know, I would have to come to you long before" (P. 135)-
Anne is in a stage of her life in which she is starting to feel, you know, attraction for the opposite sex, and it´s normal, if one of you said that had never falled in love in her/his life I will call you liar, because, especially at this age, we´re starting to look the opposite "side"(sex) and none of us immune from that "disease"(starting feel attraction to the opposite sex).

  7. on page 130 she says "she writes roughly something like- that a girl in the years of puberty becomes quiet and begins to think about hte wonders that are happening to her body", she is starting to feel like an adolescent, and is going through what every girl will go to... and she needs a friend to to share her emotions and to help her understand what really is going on and to tell her all the secrets.. like her mother or her sister but i guess she prefers to keep it to herself, writing it on her diary, and to make the tears run donw... But i guess i have also done this sometimes, like sometimes i am so sad that a friend is not with me that suddenly i have my tears running on my face..... also i agree with what victor said... :)

  10. In my opinion everyone as a teenager does the same and that's how you enjoy it because if these are the best times of your life how are you supposed to live them in those conditions? i just think that they avoid her those moments for being jewish

  12. She was thinking about what she did, I mean, she was thinkinjg how bad was she traeting her mother, She's comparing the "Anne of the past" With the "Anne of now" She's beggining to think of how much she has suffered with everyone critizing her, not sharing her own opinion, and worst of all, being silent for 2 years without doing anything! She's hiding who she really is because of other people's opinions.

  14. Honestly people, all your reviews have bored me to death.. Let's talk about important things, shall we? Anne is hiding because of her religion, she could change it, but she is attached to it and she won't let it go, even though that means she'll have to be trapped between 4 walls for the rest of her life. EVERYONE has the right to think what they want, and the germans are not letting them use this right. Also, because of the time, sex was like a tabu, which i think ain't right 'cause sex is nothing outta this world. Thank y'all.

  15. Thank you all for your comments... they are stupendous so far! Really, I am VERY impressed!

Victor and Marla, I loved the textual evidence you used and your analysis of it! It is true, just like Anne, you probably are at a point in your life that you are wondering what's going on with your body, and you can't get that "special someone" off your mind.

Valerie, very creative post with the different faces! I would imagine that if Anne were living in current times and "blogging", she would include those faces in her entries ;)

And about comparing nowadays and growing up in Anne's time... Yes, I agree with the last post, who forget to put his/her name, that people now are much more open-minded today in talking about sex, love, and all other topics that are most likely in the songs that you all listen to. This brings up Victor's question: are we invading Anne's privacy? Would you want all your "adolscent thoughts" published for the world to see? Is what Anne writes about NORMAL for you to talk about openly today? Think of all the music teens and young adults write, like the song "Alice" that Valerie mentioned. Don't those songs discuss the same topics as those in Anne's diary?

Those of you who haven't posted, or those of you who have, I challenge you to THINK about this and post TEXTUAL EVIDENCE from Anne's diary to defend your answer!

    :) Miss Nyitray

  16. For represent Anne´s life, I chose the song "Move Along"; the lyrics that make me chose that song are:

"When all you got to keep is strong, move along, move along, like I know you do; and even when your hope is gone, move along, move along, just to make it through"

These lyrics, in my own opinion, represent this part of Anne´s life as a jewish (having to hide, etc.) because, even they have to be running, hiding, etc. and their "hope is gone", they just move along through all the situations that this time (in which they have been descriminated only because they has a different religion) can give them.

I disagree with "Anonymous" when He/She says that Anne could change her religion because, it´s true, everyone have the right to express their own opinion, but, if your parents are Jewish, your sister too, you are not gonna be the "revolted" of the family, and if your parents have to be hiding, you´re not gonna be free, enjoying the life, you´re supposed to be with them (I not mean with this that it´s your obligation to be just like your parents and believe all that they want you to believe, but maybe for the times [those times], it was just like that...).

  17. We are invading anne's diary :P, thats cool ... but we are bad students :P, i like this quote....
"I want to go on living even after my death! And therefore I am grateful to God for giving me this gift, this possibility of developing myself and of writing, of expressing all that is in me. I can shake off everything if I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn." Tuesday, 4 April, 1944, pg. 177.... ~Jorge Garcia

"I've found that there is always some beauty left-in nature, sunshine, freedom, in yourself; these can all help you. Look at these things, then you find yourself again, and God, and then you regain your balance. And whoever is happy will make others happy too. He who has courage and faith will never perish in misery!" on pg. 152

  19. I must say that I really understand what Anne is feeling for Peter, and is really hard. One of the things we never thought about is if Peter isn't really into Anne, what about if her feelings are really strong and she just tells it like that because it's her point of view

  21. Well, I agrre with what everyone said but, Victor, It's true what "Anonymous" said beccause in one part of the book, she says that it would be great if she could change her religion and be free, and I also want to answer your question about the "invading your privacy", Also, in one part of a book she says that she wanted to be a novelist, and I bet that she wouldn't mind that because after all, evryone passes through those thing and that it's NATURAL! It's really mature of her part not caring talking about sex, at difference to Margot, Mr & Ms. Frank, and the Van Daans (except peter.)

  22. Madel, it´s true that she says that it would be great if she could change her religion and be free; but my point is, she can´t, I agree with her, it would be great, but she can´t!; maybe because the times, in which children just have the same religion as their parents, those times were so bad that for get married both persons have to be the same religion!; or maybe for be single-hearted to her family.

This is a topic that have to be discussed and I respect both opinion, but I still believing in mine; you need more evidence to convince me...

For us, that are inviding Anne´s privacity, reading her personal diary, he know that she´s gonna die, we said: "OMG!, there isn´t something good, at the end she´s gonna die....!!"
But for them, how don´t know their end until it´s in front of them, they can find something good, they were alive!; even they had to be hiding, they have lots of thing that other jewish didn´t have; they were free; they had food; they had each other!! So, there was something good as she said (even she didn´t know her end....).

  24. From the story and the movie I've seen that first, Anne thought Peter and Margot felt an attraction for each other, but she doesn't talk really much as Anne does with Peter. I think they're going to end up together, and Anne is going through a very difficult situation, first, she's fighting for her life by hiding in a place where someday she will be discovered, she just had 13 years, and in her place,I'll be scared, too.
Second, the only one that understasnds her more is her father, he's is the one in which she is confident with and she tries to look a side to Peter, to be near him and to see if they can go to another step, something more than just friends. I think they will end up together and how they said in pg.165. "You can tell what the temprature is by Margot and me; if it's cold we are white, and if it's hot we are red in the face", I said.
"In love?" he asked. "Why should I be in love?" My answer was rather silly. "Why not?" he said.

  25. from what Espaillat said I thought a great song would be If We Ever Meet Again, because she spends a really great time with peter, and she seems she will love to repeat it.
Margot and Peter could have had a great relationship (as friends) at the begining because of ages, but I noticed that they just had fun, nothing serious. So I things thats why Anne and Peter are so good together, they get to deeper themes.
And I think Victor is right because if I put myself in her place I really would not like people reading my own personal Diary.

  26. i agree with all the comments. what surprises me the most was that their relationship started terrible. when thay first met, they couldn't each other's face and as the time went passing, they fell in love in the book as well in the old movie. i do't know about the new one because i havn't seen it, all thought we have watched some parts on class. at first peter showed interest in margot, instead. he got ashamed and blushed every time msr. Van Daan told him that he shouldn't treat his little girlfrind like that. he always said she was to young and little. they would always make fun of eachother, and look at the result.

I specified that Anne was proud of being jewish, that's why she didn't change her religion. Even though I skind of agree with the idea that her parents and sister are jewish means that she must be jewish as well, she stayed jewish NOT because of her parents, but because she was PROUD of being who she is.

Also, Anne's dream was for her voice to be alive even though she wasn't, so please, stop feeling sorry for her diary being published, feel happy for her! Thanks y'all...

  33. Adolescenece is the best part between childhood and adulthood. You are in the stage where you want to have some kind of relationship with the person you like, puberty begins, etc... but Anne's adolescence was completely affectede by Hitler and the Germans. The cause of the Franks going into hiding was because of their religio, because they were JEWISH so they did not have privilages as well as they couldn't be in the same schools or stores as the germans. They treated them like they were not humans.

Anne and Margot saw their adolescence fly away at their faces.

And I got stuck in my house alone without any entretainment
